Hosur / Kolkata, Feb 20 (IBNS): In an attempt to transform the Indian Jewellery industry, Titan Company's Jewellery Division under the brand Tanishq, on Thursday opened the Karigar Centre for Jewellery manufacturing in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
"Spread across an area of 11,990 Sq.Ft each, the four Karigar Centre's symbolize Titan's effort, as a responsible player, in transforming the lives of Karigars from across the country. With world-class amenities provided, the 300 Karigars use their skills to craft hand-made gold Jewellery for the division," the company said in a statement.
Jewellery manufacturing is a 5000 year old industry and Karigars, as they are called, are the artisans who craft Jewellery providing the lifeline for this industry. Lack of attention and support to the Karigar community has rendered the profession unattractive and inadequate.
The Karigar Centre initiative emphasizes on overcoming the challenges associated with attracting and retaining good talent in Jewellery manufacturing for the company, official noted.
The Karigar Centre was inaugurated by C G K Nair, Director, Titan Company Limited. He was accompanied by Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director, Titan Company Limited and C K Venkataraman, CEO, Titan Jewellery Division.
Also, present at the occasion were noted dignitaries from Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Gem and Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI) and also representatives from major Jewellery companies.
Commenting on this milestone, Nair said, "Since its inception, Titan Company has always been in the forefront, transforming the Indian industry with products, practices, processes and people. While Titan is known to be a consumer-products and lifestyle company, this endeavor provides world-class facilities and amenities for people across the entire value chain - be it manufacturing, operations, marketing or retailing."
Speaking at the occasion, Bhaskar Bhatt said, "This is a momentous occasion for us today. The inauguration of Karigar Centre is yet another step to show our commitment towards transforming the lives of Karigars and their profession."
"The environment in which karigars work, at many locations, has remained primitive in terms of health, safety and comfort. It has perhaps not changed in decades. Because of this, not only is the daily life of the karigar under great pressure, but also their career span is significantly reduced. With our small step, we appeal to other players in the industry to start taking measures in this direction," he added.
C K Venkataraman, CEO, Titan Jewellery Division commented, "Titan's jewellery division is recognized for bringing in honesty and transparency in the jewellery industry at a time when it was infested with unethical practices. Be it introducing Karatmeter few years ago or opening our Karigar Centre today, our endeavor has been to 'bring in the best' that serves the interest of our stakeholders."
He added, "Karigars are the backbone of the jewellery industry. Without their contribution, it would be impossible for us to bring to life, creations that our customers cherish for the rest of their lives. With this Karigar Centre Model, we would like to bring about a transformation in improving the lifestyle of the Karigars who are yet to be given their rightful place in the industry. It is time for us and everyone out in the industry to come together and revive the art of Karigari and better the lives of Karigars."
Speaking about the facility, he added, "We believe that the Karigar Centre will re-define the way hand-made gold jewellery is made in India. This will transform work systems, processes, infrastructure and other amenities that will give the Karigars the opportunity to live in a ´home away from home´. We also believe that there is a scope for the progressive players of our industry to adopt the Karigar Centre model into their manufacturing process."
Sattar Molla, a Karigar at the venue said, "While I'm from Kolkata, I have been a part of Titan's extended family for over 10 years. Working at the Karigar Centre has helped me hone my jewellery making skills. We live here like a family and the entire karigar community in Hosur is overwhelmed at the launch of Karigar Centres. We are happy that the company thinks about us and cares about our well-being. We look forward to beginning our new phase at the Karigar Centre."
