In a shocking incident, a panchayat employee's ear was allegedly chopped off by suspected Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Thursday as he failed to report for work on the first day of the nationwide strike called by several trade unions on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Hazrat Omar. The incident happened after he reported for duty on Thursday.

TMC workers shouted slogans as they went to the panchayat office in Debipur village of the district.

TMC workers allegedly attacked Hazrat when he failed to satisfy them with his explanation of failing to report for work on the first day of the national strike.

No formal police complaint has been lodged so far.

The victim has been admitted to a local hospital.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had earlier warned all government employees that they will not be paid if they joined the strike.

The two-day nationwide strike called by several trade unions to protest anti-worker policies, labour law violations, inflation and fuel price hike of the government entered its second day on Thursday.
