Chennai: Voicing concern over prevailing eye disorders in India, Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah on Saturday called for more awareness on such diseases among the rural people.
"Statistics reveal that about 2.7 crore people are blind due to various eye disorders in India. Lack of knowledge, lethargic attitude are some of the causes which lead to vision loss," he said after inaugurating the Maxivision Eye Care hospital and first combo lasik suite here.
Noting that regular eye camps and cataract camps were "imperative", he said Non-governmental organisations, ophthalmic doctors and eye hospitals should come together in promotion of eye care.
Hailing Maxivision Eye Care Hospital for its services as he was aware of the hospital right from its establishment in Andhra Pradesh, Rosaiah said it has treated nearly 2.4 million people and has done about 1.85 lakh eye surgeries.
He commended the services of ophthalmologists and NGOs for their service in promotion of eye care.
