Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress today formally staked claim to form the next government in West Bengal as ally Congress gave a letter of support, but it remained unclear on whether the alliance partner would join the new ministry under Mamata Banerjee.

A four-member Trinamool Congress delegation met Governor M K Narayanan and submitted a list of 184 party MLAs while staking claim, after the Trinamool supremo was elected Leader of the Legislature Party.

"We met the Governor and formally staked claim to form the government," party MP Sultan Ahmed, who was among the delegates, told reporters at Raj Bhavan.

Newly-elected deputy leader of TC Legislature Party Partha Chatterjee said "We have submitted a list containing signatures of 184 MLAs to the Governor."

Chatterjee said: "We have submitted the resolution passed by the legislators electing Mamata Banerjee unanimously as legislature party leader."

He said the Congress had already given a letter of support to his party.

Senior party leaders Subrata Mukherjee and Mukul Roy were also in the delegation.

The Trinamool chief, who was not among the delegates, left for Delhi with Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee to invite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for the swearing-in ceremony, date of which has not yet been announced.

Earlier, after being elected leader of the legislature party, Banerjee said ally Congress and SUCI would be part of her "small" ministry.
