The northeast, which has over the years produced many talents, has added another feather to its cap through gymnast Dipa Karmakar.
Described as the 'Golden Girl' of Tripura, Karmakar recently brought laurels to her state by winning five gold medals at the just concluded National Senior Gymnastic All Round Championship in Punjab.
"I have been senior national four times, have won five gold medals on three separate occasions. I am very happy with my performance and give this credit to my coach Biswaswar Nandi who has worked very hard for me and at the same time I worked according to his coaching. I thank sir for all of these," said Karmakar.
Karmakar has represented India at different international events like the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games in China and won many laurels.
She has excelled at the balancing beam, uneven bars, floor exercises and the vaulting table.
Karmakar comes from a family of sportspersons, as she is the daughter of Sports Authority of India (SAI) weightlifting coach Dulal Karmakar.
Today, Dipa is rated as one of the best Indian gymnasts with 53.75 points. With her great achievement, she is now aiming to participate in the 2016 Olympics.
"Dipa was among the finalists in the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the World Cup, which in itself is a big achievement. Her target this time will be to get laurels in the coming Asian and Commonwealth Games," said Biswaswar Nandi, Dipa's coach.
Tripura has produced many gymnasts like Mantu Debnath and Kalpan Debnath, both Arjuna awardees. The success of Karmakar adds another feather on the cap of the Tripura Gymnastic Council. (ANI)
