One of the two turkeys President Obama pardoned last year was euthanized Monday after a weekend illness, a White House official has revealed maintaining that the timing had no connection to Thanksgiving.

Peace was pardoned alongside "Liberty", by the president just before Thanksgiving in 2011.

"Peace" came down with a mystery "illness" over the weekend and died after spending a year at Mount Vernon Estate, the historic home of George Washington, Rebecca Aloisi, the estate's vice president for marketing, told CNN.

"I appreciate where you're going with this. But I assure you that these birds are extremely well cared for," the New York Daily News quoted Aloisi as saying.

A veterinarian in consultation with Mount Vernon's livestock department made the call, she explained.

"I know that it was done in a humane manner, but I don't know the mechanics," Aloisi said, adding that she didn't know the nature of Peace's illness nor what was done with the remains.

Presidents have been pardoning the birds since 1989, the year of President George H.W. Bush's first White House Thanksgiving.

News of Peace's death came as Obama spared the lives of two more turkeys, named "Cobbler" and "Gobbler," Wednesday.

The two new gobblers will be on public display until early January, when they will be retired to pass the rest of their natural lives on the Mount Vernon estate. (ANI)
