New Delhi: Two sisters from Maharashtra sentenced to death for abducting 13 children and killing nine out of them will be hanged soon, say reports.

The duo will become the first women in India to be hanged.

According to sources, President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected the mercy petitions of Seema Gavit and Renuka Shinde last month.

The sisters, who belong to Kolhapur in Maharashtra, were sentenced to death in 2001 for killing several children between 1990 and 1996.

They allegedly kidnapped poor children and forced them to commit thefts. When the children grew older, the sisters killed them by bashing their heads in, hitting them with iron rods or strangling them.

The court had acquitted Kiran Shinde, Renuka's husband, who had turned approver. Anjanabai Gavit, the principal accused and mother of the sisters, had died as an undertrial in December 1997, 14 months after she was arrested in Nasik.

Renuka and Seema, who partnered their mother Anjanabai Gavit to kidnap the kids, are currently lodged at the Yerwada jail in Pune.
