The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which has long faced severe criticism for its use of full body scanners at airports, will discontinue their use after the manufacturer failed to solve privacy concerns.

The TSA, which has been the subject of much rebuke for the use of the scanners that produced naked images of the passenger, said the machines that use a low-dose of X-ray will be gone by June.

Following long-running campaigns and public outcry, the U.S. Congress had finally ruled that the scanners, that had been widely introduced after a security breach in 2009, either produce a more generic image or be removed by June.

However, after the manufacturer of the scanners Rapiscan on Thursday admitted that it wouldn´t be able to meet the June deadline, the TSA on Friday said that it had ended the contract with the company.
