Ukraine president in Bangalore on two-day visit

Bangalore, Dec 11 (IANS) Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych arrived here from New Delhi Tuesday evening on a two-day visit to this tech hub with a large official-cum-business delegation.

Yanukovych and his entourage were given a red carpet welcome by Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy at the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) airport in the city and escorted to a star hotel amid tight security.

"The visiting dignitary met Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan along with his delegation and exchanged notes on bilateral relations between the two countries," a protocol official of the state government told IANS here.

Yanukovych will Wednesday visit india's leading pharma firm Biocon Ltd. and IT bellwether Infosys Ltd. for a firsthand account of the rapid strides the companies have made in science and technology sectors.

"The visiting president and his delegation will participate in an interactive session with captains of industry and members of commerce chambers to explore trade and business opportunities," the official said.

City police have restricted vehicular movement and regulated traffic in eastern and southern suburbs to pave way for the visiting president and his delegation Wednesday too.

During his four-day visit to India beginning Sunday, Ukraine signed five agreements Monday with India, including one each in defence, IT, mining and heavy machinery, pharma and fertilizers to boost the bilateral trade, which doubled to $3 billion during the past five hears.

Yanukovych will leave Bangalore Wednesday afternoon for his countru after a historic visit to the Indian sub-continent, which also marks two decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
