Missiles fired by unmanned US drone aircraft on Tuesday killed at least six militants in Pakistan's restive tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, Pakistani security officials said.

The strike took place in the district of North Waziristan, a stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked fighters.

The missiles slammed into a militant compound in the hills near Datta Khel village, some 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan, security officials said.

"US drones fired three missiles on a militant compound. At least six militants were killed and seven others were injured," a Pakistani security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"The toll is likely to rise and the identity of the militants is not immediately known," the official said.

Two other security officials confirmed the missile strike and gave the same death toll. It was not immediately clear whether there were any high-value targets.
