Voting started in Sri Lanka Thursday in parliamentary elections widely expected to be won by President Mahinda Rajapakse's ruling party.

Election officials said people had gathered at some booths even before polling opened at 7:00 am (0130 GMT). More than 14 million people are eligible to vote for the 225-member parliament.

President Rajapakse called the legislative elections two months ahead of schedule after he won a resounding majority in January presidential polls.
