Jaipur, Jan 20 (IBNS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said the Congress, which spearheads the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the centre, has fulfilled its poll promises.

Speaking at the Chintan Shivir (brainstorming conclave) of Congress here on its last day, the PM said the results of the government´s efforts will be soon seen in the coming years and several welfare measures were taken.

He said the gap between rich and poor should be reduced and claimed that his government has reduced poverty faster than the previous NDA government.

He urged Congress workers to inform people about the welfare measures taken.

He said Congress is working towards better economic growth while assured to curb price rise at the earliest.

He said he is proud of the government´s achievements in the past eight years of UPA rule.

He also referred to the LoC tension with Pakistan and said he had made it clear that such violations by Pakistan could impact the relations.

"We want friendship with Pakistan but they have to work towards it too," he said.

Earlier in her speech, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said she was happy to see the large number of youngsters taking part in the party´s brainstorming session.

Speaking at a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) here on Sunday, she said, "I am particularly delighted with the active participation of so many of our younger colleagues at the Chintan Shivir."

"Engaging the youth more centrally in our organisation is unnecessary," she said, adding that it was the only way to develop and project new leadership.

Sonia spoke on a range of issues ranging from corruption to women´s security.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to make his first speech as Congress vice-president at the same meeting on Sunday.

The Gandhi scion was named the vice-president of the 128-year-old party on Saturday.
