West Indies lift World Twenty20 title

Darren Sammy's spirited West Indies side defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final at R Premadasa Stadium to lift the World Twenty20 title for the first time here on Sunday.

Chasing 138 runs for victory, Sri Lanka were all out at 101 runs in 18.4 overs.

Sri Lanka made a poor start in the match and lost the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan (0) in the second over of the match. Ravi Rampaul of West Indies picked up his wicket.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene (33) and Kumar Sangakkara (22) added 42 runs in the second wicket partnership after the initial blow.



Both Jayawardene and Sangakkara hit two boundaries in their innings.

Sri Lanka received a major blow when Sangakkara was dismissed by in the 10th over of the innings by Samuel Badree.

West Indies bounced in the match as the hosts were reduced from 48-2 to 69- 7 in 14.3 overs.

Angelo Mathews (1), Jeevan Mendis (3), Thisara Perera (3) and Lahiru Thirimanne (4) faield to contribute with the willows in the crucial match.

Nuwan Kulasekara gave spectators some hope as he hit 26 runs from 13 balls. he hit three boundaries and a six in the innings.

Sunil Narine remained the pick of the West Indies bowlers as he scalped three wickets by giving away nine runs in his 3.4 overs.

Earlier, riding on Marlon Samuels 78 runs from 56 balls, West Indies scored 137 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs.

Samuels hit three boundaries and six sixes in the innings.

Samuels and Dwayne Bravo (19) added 59 runs in the third wicket partnership after openers Chris Gayle (3) and

Johnson Charles (0) at the initial stage of the innings.

Darren Sammy remain not out at 26 runs.

Ajantha Mendis scalped four wickets by giving away 12 runs in his four overs for Sri Lanka.

West Indies lifted their first world title since winning the the 50-over World Cup victory in 1979.
