Western NY zoo euthanizes 12-year-old male giraffe

A zoo in western New York has euthanized a 12-year-old male giraffe after a rapid decline in the animal's health.

Buffalo Zoo officials said Friday that initial tests to determine what caused the health problems were inconclusive. They're sending samples to labs but don't expect results for several weeks.

Cain was euthanized on Tuesday.

The reticulated giraffe was born at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1998 and arrived in Buffalo in October 1999. He sired three calves.
