Would the United Progressive Alliance retain power if the Lok Sabha elections were to be held now?
This may be a tricky question to be asked on the occasion of the UPA-II completing two years in office.
Nobody expects it would be a smooth run for the Congress-led alliance in that event, unlike in 2009 when the UPA approached the electorate with a cleaner image.
In 2009, the nation thought the continuance of the UPA government, which came to power in 2004, was the need of the hour when the world was going through recession. People gave one more chance to the alliance which had projected the economist-turned-politician Manmohan Singh as a `saviour` during the difficult times.
But has the alliance lived up to the nation`s expectations?
Is the Congress victory in Assam and Kerala as well as its and its partner Trinamool Congress`s victory in West Bengal an indication that people still think that the UPA can deliver better than any other alliance?
But the party and its partner DMK were routed in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Does it mean the UPA would lose if a general election were to be held now?
What could be the reason for the mixed response?
