Mumbai; A 26-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself at her residence in suburban Juhu while her husband watched her commit suicide through a webcam, police said today.
The Mumbai police said it was probing the case of suicide of Shobhana Surti who allegedly killed herself yesterday after she had an argument with her husband Swapnil Surve while chatting through an Internet web camera.
Surti's family has alleged that Surve must have said something that forced her to take such a drastic step.
The Juhu police have registered a case against Surve.
Surti and Surve had recently got married in a temple without informing their respective families after their wedding got cancelled due to dowry demands from Surve's parents.
It was when Surve started harassing Surti for dowry that she informed about the marriage and harassment to her parents.
When Surti's parents discussed the matter with Surve's parents, they allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakhs as dowry and even threatened that they would not accept Surti as their daughter-in-law until the money is paid.
Surti had also been trying to convince Surve and they had been having frequent arguments. On Wednesday, Surti allegedly threatened to commit suicide while chatting with Surve and then hanged herself, even as he watched her do it.
Later, Surve told Surti's sister that she was taking some drastic step and told her to save her. When Surti's sister called up their neighbour to check, she had already killed herself. The neighbours then informed the police.
