As the whole world greeted their mothers a 'Happy Mother's Day' on Sunday, India did not lag behind in celebrating the same.
Mother´s Day is a celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May.
This day is celebrated as an occasion to make mothers realize once again the important role she plays in the life of a child in rearing him to a matured human being.
Mother's Day provides every child an opportunity to make his/her mother feel the crucial role she plays in his/her life.
However, consumerism has also paved its way into the celebrations since not just expressions do, but gifts are a must now-a-day to express the love to one´s mother.
From presenting her a small gift as a token of love to taking her out for a family dinner, one can try several ways to make the day really special for his mother.
Even companies launch several offers during this period to encourage more consumerism.
However, this celebration has since ages invited debates as whether this one particular day should be observed as Mother´s Day.
While some support the celebrations, others say Mother´s day cannot be celebrated in just one particular day.
"Mothers are not meant for a day.. they are for a life time ...it´s just a day that we officially dedicate to our mothers. It´s just like celebrating our birthdays. We can´t deny the fact that we are born, yet we celebrate it once in a year. Similarly we can´t deny the fact that we love our mothers but we celebrate it once in a year," said Delhi-based Finance Professional Abhiroop Bhadra.
Another Srijoni Basu of Kolkata said,"I love my mother everyday, so I cannot dedicate this one day to show my love and respect to her. It should get reflected through my work and behaviour everyday."
Mothers again have different opinions on celebrating this day.
"I have two daughters and I don´t ever feel the need to get recognised on this one particular day. Their respect for me is enough to celebrate my motherhood," said Reena Basu of Kolkata.
While Swapna Biswas of Asansol said, "Well it feels really good when my son makes my day special..it´s not just a matter of one day. I have the most amazing children-a son who is a star and a daughter who is a jewel, who love me like anything. Am glad to have children like them."
Celebrities like actress-social activist Shabana Azmi acknowledged Mother´s Day on micro blogging site Twitter.
"I am because she is...mother..," she tweeted.
Superstar Akshay Kumar tweeted:"God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. - Jewish proverb. I don´t think I´ve heard truer words. I am who I am bcoz (because) of her. She will always and forever be the 1st woman I´ve ever loved. Happy Mother´s Day to my mom & all the mom´s out there. You´ll are truly God sent!"
Musician Vishal Dadlani tweeted: "Happy Mothers´ Day to the people of ´Bharat MATA´ where women of all ages are victimised, molested, raped, brutalised, every single day."
