Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 16 runs in the first semi-final match of the World T20 at R Premadasa Stadium to cruise to the final of the tournament here on Thursday.
Chasing 140 for victory, Pakistan batsmen scored 123 runs for the loss seven wickets in 20 overs.
Skipper Mohammad Hafeez remained the top scorer for Pakistan with his 42 runs from 40 balls. He his four boundaries and a six in the match.
Nasir Jamshed (4), Kamran Akmal (1), Shoaib Malik (6) and Shahid Afridi (0) failed to deliver with their willows in the match.
Umar Akmal (29*) tried to pull things back to Pakistan´s favour but Sri Lankan bowlers bowled brilliantly to ensure the hosts reach the final of the tournament.
Pakistan needed to score 23 runs in the last over but managed to score only six runs.
Rangana Herath picked up three wickets for Sri Lanka while Ajantha Mendis and Angelo Mathews scalped two wickets each for the hosts.
Earlier, Sri Lanka scored 139 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.
Mahela Jayawardene remained the top scorer for Sri Lanka with his 42 runs. He hit seven boundaries in the match.
Tillakaratne Dilshan hit 35 runs from 43 balls.
The openers scored 63 runs in the first wicket partnership before Afridi dismissed Jayawardene in the 11th over in the match.
Kumar Sangakkara scored 18 runs from 11 deliveries
Saeed Ajmal, Afridi, Umar Gul and Mohammad Hafeez scalped one wicket each for Pakistan.
None of the Sri Lankan batsmen hit a six in the innings.
