Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha on Monday said the party should name Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha polls as it will have a huge impact on voters.

"Wherever I go, I find people and party workers strongly demanding that Narendra Modi should be projected as the party´s Prime Minister candidate," Sinha told reporters on Monday.

"After considering everything, I also felt that if the BJP declares him as the Prime Minister candidate then the party will hugely benefit in the elections. It is also going to have a huge impact on voters. I have no doubt on this," he said.

Reacting to Sinha´s comments, Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh told media: "Yashwant Sinha is not the official spokesman of the BJP."

BJP president Rajnath Singh, who had earlier hinted that Modi may soon play a bigger role in national politics for the party, met the latter on Sunday here and discussed poll issues.

Modi reached New Delhi and met the newly elected BJP president Rajnath Singh for nearly two hours when the two reportedly discussed the 2014 general elections.

Both the leaders confirmed later that they discussed 2014 polls and state matters.

With Modi tipped to be a strong contender to emerge as BJP´s prime ministerial candidate for the next year´s polls despite objections from many NDA allies like Janata Dal (United), Rajnath Singh acknowledged his importance and earlier said none can deny the popularity of Modi now.

Modi has just won the Gujarat elections with a strong mandate to rule for another five years, his third consecutive term.
