Bangalore: Former Karnataka chief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa has finally decided to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), party sources have revealed.

According to the BJP, it has been trying to convince him not to quit, since state elections are due next year and he is a power leader of the Lingayats, the largest community in the state.

There are reports that the BJP offered to make him the president of its Karnataka unit, but declined.

The formal announcement of the Karnataka Janata Party is likely to be made in December.
