Panaji, Mar 2 (IBNS) A 26-year-old NRI ended his life by jumping off the Zuari Bridge Friday evening, police said.

Hemant Gawande, originally hailing from Curchorem posted a parting Facebook message and a picture of his wounded wrist, which he had slit before taking the deadly plunge.

Inspector Sandip Vaigankar said the youth had uploaded his blood stained hands on Facebook and later leaped into the waters of Zuari River after 7:30pm.

Onlookers while trying to persuade him not to take the drastic step had simultaneously alerted the police, who immediately reached the spot and pleaded the youth not to jump.

"But he plunged into the waters before we could reach him. The marine police and expert swimmers were summoned but we could not locate him," the officer said. His body was fished out only after 9:30 pm.

Initial investigation has revealed that Hemant had come down to Goa last November on a vacation and was to return back in the next few weeks. The motive of his suicide is possibly one-sided love affair with a Facebook friend.

Little before the suicide, he had also sent parting SMSes to his friends and gave evasive replies on desperate inquiries by the latter that he was in the southernmost tip of Goa.
