The World Cup in Mexico was held at altitude and in midsummer heat made worse by FIFAÃÂs decision to have noon kick-offs to appease European television stations. As a result, despite arriving many weeks early to acclimatise, many European teams found the going tough. Games were often lethargic and one-paced.
