So another round of fixing in cricket has come to light. This is the umpteenth scandal that has surfaced and one wonders whether it will be any different this time or will we forget all about it till the next one comes along.
It is high time something was done about the menace of both spot and match-fixing and here are some steps that the authorities could take right away…
1. Fixing legislation: Right now there are no laws in India to counter match or spot-fixing. That’s why even though many cricket players have been banned; there have been no convictions in India. So every fixer knows that he will eventually get away. While top players get huge money through endorsements and may not be tempted, the same is not with the case of other players.
For the first time at least the government is talking of specific laws to counter fixing. Ministers say that they have been studying laws in other countries and will introduce legislation in the next session of Parliament. It remains to be seen whether that will happen or it will be just another empty promise of the government.
