19-year old American teen Sloane Stephens has pulled of the biggest upset at the Australian Open after defeating tournament favourite, Serena Williams 3-6 7-5 6-4 in a 2 hours 17 minutes long epic battle in the quarterfinals.

The 29th seed Stephens would now face world number one Victoria Azarenka in the semifinal of the Australian Open.

Earlier, defending champion and top seed Azarenka beat Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-5 6-1, the Herald Sun reports.

Williams struggled with a back injury and left the court for treatment towards the end of the second set, however, she broke serve immediately after returning, although ultimately surrendered the set, the paper said.

Stephens, who looked up to Williams as her idol growing up, lost to the second seed in Brisbane recently, but was lost for words when asked her reaction to winning.

Stephens said she couldn't believe she beat Serena, adding her grandparents would be freaking out because they'll be watching the match on the computer.

Williams looked headed for victory when she cruised through the opening set and led 2-1 in the second.

Stephens then manufactured two service breaks in succession, gave up another when Williams came back on court, but steadily held to take the set and level the match with a break at 7-5, the paper reported.

The frustration built for Williams, who smashed her racquet and threw it at her chair at the end of a game in the deciding set, which Stephens closed out 6-4, it added. (ANI)
