Sport and controversy have been constant bedfellows.
As far back as in AD 67, we had the Roman Emperor Nero, who invented what will always remain a sure-shot way of winning: bribing Olympics officials to disqualify all his fellow-competitors.
Modern sportsmen have thankfully not been able to take recourse to the Nero method, but flighty souls that they are, many of them have not let that stand in the way of their maintaining a more than nodding acquaintance with controversy.
