Legendary England opener Geoffrey Boycott has backed new batting sensation Joe Root and said that he will have a long and successful career.

The former Yorkshire cricketer said that England is lucky to have the sensational youngster in the team, adding that Root has the ability to play a wide range of shots unlike many other cricketers, the Daily Star reports.

Stating that Root has an experienced 'head' on young 'shoulders', Boycott said that although the young batsman, who had played for Yorkshire for two years, was initially set to played for a while then rested, he has given an incredible performance in all the matches he has played which may earn him a permanent place in the squad.

Boycott further said that Root has the range and ingenuity to hit the ball over the rope or a range of strokes to knock the ball around the ground, which is necessary in order to play in the flat pitches of today.

According to the former cricketer, Root, who plays fearlessly like any young cricketer, is a smart player who can go through any situation with clarity, which Boycott added, will help him for a long international career.

Root helped England win the second one-day match against New Zealand on Wednesday with a thrilling 79 not out off just 56 balls, the report added. (ANI)
