British sprinter Martyn Rooney is set to be a key witness in the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of shooting down girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in South Africa.

Olympic 400metre runner Rooney has just spent a month in South Africa training with the 26-year-old Olympian and Paralympian, and there he also got to know Pistorius's girlfriend Steenkamp, the Daily Express reports.

Rooney flew home to Birmingham on Monday, four days before the model was shot dead by Pistorius at his home in Pretoria. Family and friends claim it was an accident.

Rooney's closeness to Pistorius and Steenkamp is indicated by her tweet on February 9: "It's the last supper [with] Martyn Rooney. I think Oscar Pistorius and I will kidnap you forever!!!!"

Rooney's unique perspective on their relationship could become the focus of investigations as police build their case of premeditated murder against Pistorius, who made history last year as the first double amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics., the paper reported.

Rooney, who shared meals with the couple and went on tours of the country with them, is likely to be asked to give information on how they got on in their home and at social events, the paper said. (ANI)
