Ahmedabad, Nov 15 (IANS) India were 120 for no loss at lunch on the first day of the first cricket Test match against England at the Motera here Thursday.

Before the start of the series, fingers were raised on both the Indian openers for being woefully out of form. However, Virender Sehwag (79 batting) and Gautam Gambhir (37 batting) proved their detractors wrong putting India on the front foot for the rest of the Test.

Electing to bat on a pitch that is known for its wear and tear on the last couple of days, the Delhi duo put on an unbeaten 120-run stand in just 28 overs.

Sehwag was in punishing mood as he carted the England bowlers all over the ground. He smashed 12 fours and a six, scoring 79 off just 66 balls.

Gambhir, on the the other hand, was much more subdued. He took his time to settle down and gave his Delhi partner the strike on every opportunity. His innings so far included three fours and came off 103 balls.

English pacer Stuart Broad was unlucky not to dismiss Sehwag, who went for a booming drive, as the ball narrowly missed the Indian opener's stumps.

James Anderson and Tim Bresnan were both taken for runs by Sehwag as the two English pacers were plundered for more than six runs per over.
