Gary Lineker shocked his 1.3 million followers by announcing he was quitting Twitter, on Friday.
The 52-year-old former football player wrote in his final tweet: "I'm leaving twitter for personal reasons. Thanks all."
Linekar had been regularly posting updates, since joining the micro blogging site a year ago, and was one of the most followed in the UK, the Mirror reported.
The move even took his son George by surprise, as he retweeted his dad's goodbye message and added, "You what?"
Later, George wrote over the course of several tweets: "Old mans deleted his account, he's come off Twitter. #prayforgary. I'll sort him out haha"
It's not known why he left the social network but his tweeting has not been without its problems.
In August last year, he said that he felt "physically sick" after a Twitter "troll" joked about his son George's childhood battle with leukaemia. (ANI)
