Reeva Steenkamp's uncle has said he will forgive Oscar Pistorius for shooting and killing his niece, regardless of the outcome in court, it was reported by CNN.

"I would like to be face to face with him [Pistorius] and forgive him, forgive him [for] what he's done and that way I can find most probably more peace with the situation... but tell him face to face," Mike Steenkamp told CNN in an interview on Thursday.

"Whatever the outcome, I feel with my belief, and if Christ could forgive when he died on the cross, why can't I?"

Pistorius is expected back in court on 4 June. Steenkamp told the television channel the family would not be present in court.

"None of us are going to be represented at the court and the trial. None of us. None of us... are going to go up," he said.

"We won't be present. I can tell you that now and for that reason it's not about the court case, it's about Reeva."

Asked about reports emerging of Pistorius's past, Steenkamp told the interviewer the less he knew, the better.

"The less I know from the outside, the better. For myself, right or wrong, I'm still focused on the one thing, forgiveness, and I'm not going to change from that."

Pistorius faces a charge of murder after the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home on Valentine's Day. He was released on bail of R1-million on 22 February.

In an affidavit submitted as part of his application for bail, Pistorius said he had thought there was an intruder in his house when he fired the shots.
