IPL – The records that matter

IPL III is all set to enter the record books as the Youtube IPL.

With a potential 500-million-strong online audience waiting to catch the 60 matches scheduled in 2010, the upcoming season is already crackling with an air of expectancy.

Ahead of what could turn out to be the biggest blockbuster in cricketing history, a look at the record-breaking moments from the first two IPLs.

The very first ton

The first match of the IPL, on 18 April, 2008, also threw up the tournament's first centurion.

Playing as an opener for the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Bangalore Royal Challengers at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, New Zealander Brendon McCullum scorched his way to a 73-ball unbeaten 158, an innings that fittingly ended with a six off the final delivery of his team's innings.

It remains the highest individual score both in an IPL match and in T20s.

His tally of 13 sixes is also an IPL record, and the second highest numbers of sixes in T20s the world over.
