The year gave the prodigiously gifted left hander the chance to consolidate his position at No 6 in the batting order in Tests and three half centuries in six matches saw him retain the slot though one suspects that bigger scores are round the corner.
In ODIs he remained a match winning batsman and by yearend his career strike rate was approaching 90. He had two hundreds and five half centuries all scored at a healthy rate, the highlight being 131 off 102 balls with 10 fours and seven sixes against West Indies at Kingston to help set up a 20-run victory.
