There were doubts as to how he would fare without Anil Kumble at the other end but Harbhajan Singh rose to the occasion. His status as the No 1 spin bowler in the country was confirmed by his bag of 29 wickets in six Tests.
He played leading roles in all the three Indian victories during the year. By yearend, his tally of wickets had swelled to 343 from 80 matches and it was clear that after almost a dozen years in international cricket he had lost none of his effectiveness.
He also remained the leading spin bowler in ODIs beating back the challenges from the young brigade and was regularly among the wickets including one five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka at Colombo besides maintaining an excellent economy rate.
