HARBHAJAN SINGH: The latest in the long line of outstanding Indian spin bowlers, Harbhajan Singh has carried on the rich tradition by being Indian cricket`s great hope in the new millennium. He has already made his presence felt strongly, as a bag of 238 wickets in 57 Tests at an average of 29.8 and 174 wickets in 151 ODIs at 32.2 apiece and a strike rate of 46.7 will illustrate. But, at 27, there is a strong feeling that the off spinner`s best is still to come. Harbhajan can really make the ball talk. His prodigious turn, disconcerting bounce and deceptive `doosra` has made life hell for the batsmen. The high point of his career has been the series against Australia in 2001 when with a bag of 32 wickets in three Tests – including the first hat trick by an Indian bowler – he was chiefly responsible for India winning a famous series. But Harbhajan has also had other notable feats to his credit and by the time he finishes he could be running Kumble close as a match winner and as a successful wicket taker.
