India has played ten matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground since their very first outing Down Under way back in 1947. Of these India managed to win just two games by 222 runs in 1977-78 and 59 runs in 1980-81. Australia, on the other hand, won as many as seven matches including the last four games with one remaining game ending in drawn affairs. India’s Melbourne heroes over the years:
Vinoo Mankad in 1948: Opening batsman Vinoo Mankad became first Indian player to score first hundred against Australia and in Australia. In the third Test he made superb 116 and in the fifth & final game a masterly 111 which lasted for five hours. However, his brilliant efforts went in vain as India lost both matches by huge margins.
