Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho could be sacked at the end of the season if his men fail to beat Manchester United in the Champions League round of 16.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Special One's disorderly reign at the Santiago Bernabeu hit a new low after Real Madrid's 3-2 defeat to Malaga left them 16 points behind bitter rivals Barcelona.

Ex-Chelsea boss Mourinho insists he will not quit even though he has conceded the Spanish title to Barcelona, and it leaves him facing another unhappy departure as he is almost certain to leave Madrid in the summer, it added.

But the United clash in February gives Mourinho one last chance to leave Madrid with his head held high and the last 16 showdown takes on even greater significance, the paper said.

The paper further reported that under-pressure Mourinho believes the players are still behind him and that his previous achievements should not be forgotten.

Mourinho had said that he is not worried at all and he won't resign, but admitted that the results do matter.

Mourinho's relationship with the Spanish press is under more strain, as he has been angry in press conferences and took questions badly about his -decision to drop keeper and captain Iker Casillas, it added.

It is the first time Casillas has been dropped in 10 years and Mourinho's decision to pick 25-year-old Antonio Adan backfired as Real Madrid lost to Malaga.

Casillas is seen as being so powerful in Madrid that some quarters of the Spanish media have suggested Mourinho was almost inviting the club to sack him, the paper concluded. (ANI)
