South Africa fast bowler Ryan McLaren hit a six off the last ball to help Proteas avoid an ignominious home one-day international series defeat against New Zealand, as the hosts won the last match by one wicket at Potchefstroom.

A heroic hundred from Graeme Smith laid the foundation for South Africa to beat New Zealand as he struck 116 runs of 130 balls, Sport24 reports.

McLaren scooped the ball over fine leg for maximum when South Africa needed three off the last delivery to win the third match and stave off the first ODI series sweep against it at home.

The Proteas finished on 264-9 after New Zealand posted 260-9 in its 50 overs.

Dale Steyn was dismissed off the second last ball to leave McLaren to win the game with his six off James Franklin.

New Zealand still won the series 2-1 for its first ODI series success in South Africa, the paper concluded. (ANI)
