Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger was arrested by the Northumbria Police following an allegation made by a woman that the 21-year old forward assaulted her at city hotel.

Police cops, who arrested Ranger on suspicion of rape, quizzed him today on the suspicion of rape, The Daily Mirror reports.

The woman alleges that her drink was spiked while she was enjoying a night out in the hotel and Ranger was arrested at his home in Forest Hall, Newcastle on Friday.

Ranger was taken to nearby Wallsend police station where detectives from the rape investigation unit continued to question him until 1pm today when he was released.

A police spokeswoman said on January 24 a woman reported to police that she had been raped overnight at a hotel in Jesmond and a 21-year-old man has been arrested at an address in Forest Hall on suspicion of rape, adding he has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

His solicitor drove off Ranger, who left the police station dressed in black trainers, tracksuit bottoms and body warmer, with a black hoodie.

The player was not available for comment at his home tonight and Newcastle United declined to discuss his arrest.

Ranger is accused of attacking the woman at the 50 pound-a-night Carlton Hotel in Jesmond. (ANI)
