Adam Gilchrist: In the new millennium, Adam Gilchrist was arguably the most dangerous batsman at the top of the order who could intimidate bowlers even as he walked to the crease. His explosive left-handed batsmanship resulted is one of the finest records for any batsman in limited overs cricket and by the time he quit the scene early this year, his tally of almost 10,000 runs with 16 hundreds and 55 half centuries at an impressive average of nearly 36 and an unbelievable strike rate of virtually 97 marked him out as one of the giants. It was no surprise that he was able to score his last century for Australia at the age of 36 years and 93 days. This was in the Commonwealth Bank series game against Sri Lanka in his home ground in Perth in February this year. Batting first, Australia lost two wickets for 66 before Gilchrist, who opened the batting, and Michael Clarke (43) added 105 runs for the third wicket. Andrew Symonds fell quickly but Gilchrist carried on till he was fifth out at 206 in the 44th over. By this time, his 118 off 132 balls with nine fours and three sixes had put Australia on the road to a challenging total. They were all out for 236 in the last over and then proceeded to bowl out Sri Lanka for 173 in the 46th over.
