Sir Richard Hadlee was born on 3 July 1951 in St Albans, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. He was the youngest son of former New Zealand captain Walter Hadlee, who was a member of the New Zealand Cricket Board. Hadlee made his debut in first class cricket in 1971/72 for Canterbury.
