Of course I have been. I will be lying if I said I do not. I am 39+ and it is not abnormal for me to think of it. It is natural. At that moment, I will go by what my heart says. At this moment, my heart says I am okay. But you will have to look at series by series.
Some people are saying that Sachin is still playing because of the number of commercial endorsements associated with him. Therefore, he needs to delay his retirement because of commercial commitments.
My manager tells me that there were a couple of articles about this issue. As a matter of fact, there was an article in The Economic Times that stated what you just said. I'd call this irresponsible journalism by a journalist who has vested interests.
Despite the article, I have a wonderful relationship with the endorser. The head of Toshiba, in fact, called to tell me that what was written in the article was not true. So these things do not matter to me. Whatever the agenda, if they wanted to publish such an article, they are entitled to it. But I'd call it irresponsible journalism.
What is your opinion on the amount of cricket that is being played these days?
The amount of cricket played now is definitely more than what it used to be earlier. I have always maintained that in between series, when a player feels that he has played enough, there should be adequate gap for the cricketer to recover so that he can play a good game afterward. I have also told the BCCI about this - that a decent gap between series for a player will ensure quality play in the next game.
So the BCCI needs to re-evaluate its calendar?
Yes, we need to look at the gaps in between series. Yes, there was a stage when we played for 14-16 months continuously followed by a 2 month rest period. However, there are breaks being given now between series and the BCCI has also given the players the option to take rest if they think they need it. In fact, I have spoken to the BCCI chief Srinivasan about this and he agreed with me.
