The wicket triggered a middle-order collapse as England slipped from 73/2 to 88/6. Praveen, who swung the bowl with admirable control, was rewarded when he removed Strauss and Eoin Morgan in one over.
Strauss, who resolutely batted 98 balls, went for a drive off Praveen and Raina again pouched a safe catch and Morgan was dismissed lbw for a duck.
Matt Prior (1) was out to Sreesanth jabbing at delivery that squared him up; the edge went to first slip Dravid.
India's Praveen Kumar, left, celebrates after taking the wicket of England's captain Andrew Strauss, right, caught by Suresh Raina, bottom, for 32 on the first day of their cricket test match at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, Nottingham, England, Friday July 29, 2011.
