When his name was picked out of the draw bowl last week and placed at No.19 to play Kevin Kim in the first round, few really cared. Ok, so another Indian and another first round defeat. WhatÃÂs new?
Even Vijay Amritraj, conducting the draw ceremony of the ATP Chennai Open, barely made a mention of this young Indian who the following week made waves. As we trooped out of the hall, someone whispered in my ears: ÃÂKeep an eye on this boyÃÂ.
The ÃÂboyÃÂ happened to be 23-year-old Somdev Devvarman, born in Tripura, a graduate from the University of Virginia, US of A, the NCAA champion in 2007 and 2008 during which he won 44 matches and lost just one, the 2006 final; more significantly, climbed from 1,036 at the start of 2008 to 202 in the 2008 season!
