South African editors have supported a planned Australian media protest against a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ban on US photo agency Getty Images.
The BCCI has refused customary accreditation to Getty for the upcoming Australian cricket tour of India.
The SA National Editors' Forum (SANEF) has said that it will support Australian editors, publishers and broadcasters on the issue, who will be protesting against the BCCI ban as Getty also provides images to major Australian publishers, Sport24 reports.
Stating that Australian publishers planned to boycott live pictures of the video stills of the four-Test tour against India, SANEF has said that it regards the BCCI's conduct as a violation of the customary arrangements for media coverage of sports and a restriction on the freedom of the press.
Adding that the ban may cause serious harm to cricket, SANEF requested the International Cricketing Council (ICC) and London-based News Media Coalition to support the Oz media protest.
SANEF said that this protest is similar to a protest called by English publishers when the BCCI introduced a ban on photo agencies during the recent English cricket tour of India.
The News Media Coalition is associated with warding off attempts by sporting bodies to impose unacceptable conditions for media accreditation at sporting events, the report added. (ANI)
