Australia's new spin coach Stuart MacGill has warned that sending Xavier Doherty to India for the second Test may backfire, as he claimed that Doherty is not a Test bowler.

The warning came with MacGill's revelations that he will personally contact spinner Nathan Lyon to boost his confidence after observing his form in Australia's first-Test defeat, News.com.au reports.

Although the former Test leg-spinner praised Doherty's short-form ability, he said that a bowler of Doherty's caliber with a first-class average of 44.56 and a Test mark of 102 may be easily destroyed by India's all-star batting line-up.

However, MacGill said that Doherty has contributed a lot to the team dynamics and added that the he has managed to retain a place among Australia's top three short-form spinners in the past five years.

Instaed of Doherty, MacGill said that an alliance between Lyon and Glenn Maxwell would have been more suitable for the Hyderabad Test. (ANI)
