A finger injury in a tour match on his second trip unfortunately ended Barrington's enormously successful run in India.
On his first tour in 1961-62 he notched up hundreds in the first three Tests. It was significant that when he failed in the next two England lost.
Still he ended the series with 594 runs at an average of 99 and followed this up with 80 in the first Test at Madras on his second trip two years later.
But the injury ruled him out of the rest of the tour. However, his tally of 674 runs from just six Tests at an average of over 94 marks him out as among the most successful batsmen to tour India.
Barrington also was among the runs against India in England in 1959 and 1967.
