Turner turns it on
Glenn Turner was New Zealand`s batting mainstay through the 1970s. A classical opener who could keep his nose to the grindstone when the situation demanded dour and defensive batsmanship, Turner later blossomed into an attractive strokeplayer in the shorter version of the game. His 171 not out against East Africa was the first 150-plus score in ODI cricket. It was also the third instance of a batsman carrying his bat through the full quota of overs. The innings remained a world-record until Kapil Dev made the famous 175 against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup. Interestingly, Mr Turner has a strong Indian connection. Mrs Turner, the current Mayor of Dunedin who goes by the first name of Sukhi, is a Punjabi by birth.
