Rahul Dravid was the glue that kept the innings together. It’s going to be next to impossible to find a suitable replacement. But the game goes on and someone will have to be found.
The selection committee may have to try many permutations and combinations with slots in the Test batting line-up slowly opening up one by one.
A look at some of the likely candidates for the all-crucial 1 down position…
Gautam Gambhir: Gambhir has made 3700 Test runs at an average of 45. He could walk into any Test team in the world. However, he has been out of sorts as an opener of late. His average has already fallen (It used to be 50+) some time back.
In ODIs he averages 40.5 and marginally better at 42 when he come 1 down. He could try that position in Tests now. Such a move might help revive both Gambhir and India. If one looks at the last two overseas tours, then only two performances stand out in the failure of the Fab 5: Dravid in England Tests and Gambhir in the CB Series, in which he came 1 down half the time.
