Indian stand-in Test captains have been traditionally lucky with many of them drawing or winning Test matches when given the responsibility.
In a time when we used to lose most of our Tests, stand-in captain Hemu Adhikari managed a respectable draw against West Indies in 1959. Adhikari hit a half-century and took the only three Test wickets of his entire career in that match. It may be noted that we were 0-3 down in the series at that time.
Gundappa Vishwanath drew his first Test as stand-in captain in 1980 as did Rahul Dravid in 2003.
