Ever since it began in 2008, the Indian Premier League has spelt bad news for goodness knows how many people. Here’s a look at the A to Z of people affected by the IPL in a bad way…
A for Amit, Abhinav, Ankeet, Ajit…
Amit Yadav along with TP Sudhindra, Mohnish Mishra, Shalabh Srivastava, Abhinav Bali, Ankeet Chavan , Ajit Chandila are just some of the names that have come in spot fixing allegations.
Former IPL head honcho Lalit Modi even dragged in the names of Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. A is also for the Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) to which many of these names are given.
B for Badshah Khan
Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan has been involved with one IPL controversy after another. He had a spat with cricket legend Sourav Ganguly, was found smoking in the stadium, had a tussle with a security guard, got banned from Wankhede Stadium, got an Enforcement Directorate notice over Kolkata Knight Rider Shares…. Phew!
C for Cheerleaders
IPL cheerleaders have alleged abuse, racial discrimination and one called Gabriella Pasqualotto started blogging about it only to be sacked for the same by the authorities.
D for Dhoni
Dhoni has had a spotless career with Team India and won too many laurels to name. However IPL has been bad news for him.
His name got dragged into betting allegations, he declared that Gurunath Meiyappan had officially nothing to do with Chennai Super Kings to be proved wrong and there’s the conflict of interest since he’s India Cements Vice President.
English and Pakistani players
Forget the controversies—at least all the players are making good money. All except most from England and Pakistan who have the worst representation in IPL.
F for the fake IPL player
A fake IPL player started blogging showing KKR, SRK, Ganguly and coach John Buchanan in bad light and that set off many a controversy.
G for Gurunath Meiyappan
This cricket enthusiast has fallen from grace from being the centre of CSK to being banned from cricket.
H for Harbhajan Singh
After a string of ICC fines, Bhajji slapped S Sreesanth and was on the edge when he could have got a life ban for the incident but luckily it wasn’t taken that seriously.
I for the Indian team
The biggest casualty has been the Indian team and thanks to packed schedules, IPL fatigue may have set in and it may have contributed to our overseas Test whitewash.
J for Jadeja
The king of controversy in IPL—Sir Ravindra has changed teams, been banned and even accused to match-fixing. He has been involved with Rajasthan Royals, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Chennai Super Kings and all 3 teams are out of the IPL!
K for Kapil Dev
He was a high flier with the Indian Cricket League (ICL) but the IPL brought him down to earth and he became a pariah. Has since then patched up with the BCCI.
L for Lalit Modi
The man who started it all—The founder of the IPL finds himself out of the IPL, Indian cricket and even India!
M for Mallya
The king of good times Vijay Mallya became the king of bad times ever since the IPL started. Royal Challengers Bangalore has won no titles and been involved with many controversies.
N for N Srinivasan
He has donned many hats and many leadership roles in industry and sports but in the end it was CSK which brought him down to earth—Still under investigation.
O for oldies
A lot of oldies thought they could retire quietly and enjoy IPL but that didn’t happen for many. Shane Warne saw a lot of controversies, Andrew Symonds quit the IPL early, Rahul Dravid was ejected from RCB and retired out of RR with the team being under a betting cloud.
P for Pomersbach
In 2012, RCB’s Luke Pomersbach was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman and beating her fiancé.
Q for Quarrels galore
Gautam Gambhir had tiffs with Dravid and Virat Kohli, who was booed by the Mumbai crowd. Kieron Pollard went against Shane Watson. Robin Uthappa got hold of Sarfraz Nawaz’s collar…
R for Roy
Subrata Roy of Sahara was a high-flier till he met IPL. His Pune Warriors India shut down and he finds himself in jail.
S for Sreesanth
The controversial cricketer finally saw his career ending in IPL when his name cropped up in a match-fixing scandal.
T for Tharoor
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had a Twitter spat with Lalit and lost his union ministry. T is also for T Venkattram Reddy who lost Deccan Chargers and got arrested.
U for Umpire Asad Rauf
Rauf’s name came up in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing controversy.
V for VVS Laxman
Was not treated that well by Deccan Chargers and he switched to KTK, only to see it shutting down.
W for Wadia
Ness Wadia of Kings XI Punjab was accused of attacking his girlfriend Preity Zinta during an IPL match. A police case is on.
X the unknown scams
How many scams are still yet to come out? No-one knows.
Y for Yuvi
Yuvraj Singh got a record price at an IPL auction and soon after his father lashed out at Dhoni. Did that effectively end Yuvi’s Team India career?
Z for Zinta
Preity found her Bollywood career nosedive after being associated with IPL, then there’s her allegations against Wadia and finally KXIP has never won an IPL title.
